Single-channel video with sound. Duration: 10:21:23
Video & Sound Editing: Maria Paschalidou
Produced in 2020, The World Upside Down is a single-channel digital video with sound which contains fragments of several mnemonic events that took place in Keratsini, Drapetsona and Piraeus in the framework of the Anti-fascist September 2019: Anti-Fascist Festival, Ergostasio Kahramanoglou, Keratsini 15/09/2019; In memoriam Concert, Lypasmata Drapetsonas, Drapetsona 17/09/2019; Street Walk Demonstration, Keratsini to Piraeus 18/09/2019. Also, the video includes moments of public talks delivered by the lawyers who represented Pavlos Fyssas’s family (Anti-Racist Festival, Goudi, Athens 30/06/2019), selected image recordings and sound pieces from my conversation with the mother of the murdered rapper, Magda Fyssa (Keratsini 22/11/2019), and select sound testimonies from my discussions with members of the anti-fascist audience of the trial against Golden Dawn.
The video does not serve as documentary evidence, but rather uses symbolic language and fragmented narratives to become a digital assemblage of memories emerging from and redefining different subjects, objects, places, events and testimonial sound.
This art project is part of my postdoctoral research "Performative aspects of political loss: Lethal censorships, haunting memories". The research was co-funded by Greece and the European Union (European Social Fund-ESF) through the Operational Program "Human Resources Development, Education and Lifelong Learning", in the framework of the "Reinforcement of Postdoctoral Researchers – 2nd circle” (MIS-5033021) act implemented by the State Scholarships Foundation of Greece (IKY).
